This high-priced service that has sparked discussion in Silicon Valley seems novel, but it unexpectedly reveals another side of tech socializing: people in the tech world need offline socializing more than imagined—not the kind of cocktail party networking, but deep, resonant, cognitive exchanges with like-minded individuals.
Contrary to the stereotype of 'honest and dull' tech people, on domestic social platforms like Xiaohongshu and Douyin, big company employees, interns, and OPC entrepreneurs are posting 'Coffee Chat' invitations, and even communities specifically organizing such exchanges have emerged.
So, in this Internet age where information is readily available, why do people in the tech and startup circles still spend time and money to attend offline gatherings?
From Coffee Chat to Hackathons: Decentralization and Real-world Pressure
Unlike the centralized, hierarchical socializing of the financial world centered on funds, licenses, and various barriers, or the relationship-based networks of the real estate industry relying on resource deals, offline socializing in the AI tech community shows a distinct decentralized trait.
Here, job rank and experience are not absolute standards of voice. A newly graduated student with innovative ideas and solid hands-on experience can have an equal conversation with big company managers and startup founders.
Natalie is a typical young developer who grew up in the era of large models. She only seriously started engaging with Agent and AGI directions in the last two years; before that, she was just an ordinary user of ChatGPT. What Do Tech People Really 'Talk' About: Information Asymmetry, Trust Costs, and Psychological Belonging
Why, when free information and courses are available online, do people still spend money and time to attend offline events? From our exchanges, we distilled three common needs.
The most core driver is reducing information asymmetry. The iteration speed in the AI track is extremely fast; a month-old approach may already be outdated. A large amount of first-hand tactics, unverified ideas, and industry insights never settle on the public internet.
Jasper deeply resonates with this: online content often provides fixed conclusions without the ability to get to the bottom of things; entrepreneurs need quick confirmation, and such questioning and debate can only happen offline.

Flora bluntly called it 'unreliable,' arguing that genuine industry exchange requires personality equality and value parity, not one-sided paid companionship.
Domestically, some hackathons may degenerate into tools for user conversion for enterprises, with award rules showing clear lead-generation tendencies. Participants invest time and energy, only to serve as free testers for the organizer's product.
A more common problem is event homogenization and superficiality. Some events under the banner of 'entrepreneurship and investment exchange' merely involve a round of self-introductions and adding WeChat contacts, lacking deep discussion and practical value.
To improve quality, Jasper and Flora attempt refined operational mechanisms: pre-screening, process control during events, and restrained post-event operations.
Flora has established a three-layer screening of 'payment threshold + application form + pre-event communication' to judge participation motivation and professionalism. The 98-yuan ticket first filters out those just looking for freebies; the application form preliminarily matches backgrounds; a brief chat before the event assesses motivation and professionalism. She noted that quality noticeably improves after charging.
Event control is key to ensuring quality. Flora sets clear topics and limits roundtable discussions to one hour; Jasper guides discussions deeper, not only discussing practical difficulties but also commercial possibilities and model innovation, helping participants broaden their thinking.
Industry trends point to a change: the core barrier of tech communities is shifting from traffic scale to the professional cognition of the organizer. Flora said that the ceiling of OPC and AI communities is the cognitive ceiling of the organizer.
Regarding future directions, moving from broad to vertical. Flora plans to launch vertical industry sessions for healthcare, entertainment, etc., after accumulating 30-50 users per single industry.
Member-based services are also a possible direction. Jasper revealed that mature communities are already offering annual membership cards, with fees ranging from 1,000 yuan to tens of thousands, allowing unlimited event attendance.
